Frequently asked questions

How is the take-home difference calculated?

Each salary is run through the same 2026/27 tax engine using your region, pension percentage and student loan plan. The difference is Salary B's annual take-home minus Salary A's.

Does a higher salary always mean more take-home?

Almost always, but the gap narrows at thresholds. Above £100,000 the Personal Allowance tapers, and between £60,000 and £80,000 the High Income Child Benefit Charge can raise your effective marginal rate sharply.

Should pension contributions be compared before or after tax?

The calculator deducts your employee pension percentage before applying Income Tax and NI, which is how relief-at-source and net-pay arrangements usually feel in take-home terms. Salary sacrifice can save a little more NI.
